The US Department of Defense(DOD) has
directed that suppliers have little more than a year
to begin attaching RFID tags. The DoD policy, announced
in October, mandates that RFID tags be attached to the
lowest-possible level of product—whether individual
piece, case or pallet—by January 2005. The only
exceptions will be bulk goods such as sand, gravel or
liquids.
"Implementation of RFID minimizes
time spent through the normal means of inventory processing,"
according to a statement released by the DOD. "This
technology allows the improvement of data quality, items
management, asset visibility and maintenance of materiel.
Further, RFID will enable DoD to improve business functions
and facilitate all aspects of the DoD supply chain."
